How to Make Candles with Recycled Canton Glass Jars

In this article, we’ll explore a fun and creative way to reuse your Canton fondue sauce jars, giving them a second life in the form of candles. These candles can then brighten up your everyday life and add a warm ambiance to your next Canton fondue.

Preparing glass containers

Before you start making your candles, be sure to clean your Canton glass jars thoroughly. You can wash them with warm water and soap, then dry them thoroughly. Don’t forget to remove any sticky residue or labels to ensure a clean surface. Pro tip: If you’re having trouble removing labels, soak them in hot water with a little vinegar. This should help loosen the adhesive more easily.

Making the wax

Now that your containers are ready to become the stars of the evening, let’s dive into the art of candle wax making. Simply follow the steps as you would for any other recipe, by just replacing the flour, salt and pepper with wax, wick and fragrances.

Ingredients

  • Soy wax or beeswax: Get your natural wax from our friends the bees. You’ll find beeswax directly from a local beekeeper or online from certain sites. You can also buy soy wax, which will give the same result. We recommend around 500 g of wax to make 3 to 4 candles.
  • Coconut oil: Because even candles need a little exotic flair in their lives. Beware: this oil produces soft, smooth candles that will have you dreaming of tropical beaches. Allow 50 g of coconut oil for the same quantity of 3 to 4 candles.
  • Fragrance: Opt for scents that make you feel like you’re strolling through a rose garden or getting a massage at the spa. You can use your favourite essential oils, such as eucalyptus, rosemary or lavender.
  • Pre-waxed wicks with holders: Several types of wick are available. There are wooden wicks that make a crackling sound, and cotton wicks that burn more evenly — the choice is yours! You’ll find them online or at specialist retailers.

Instructions

  1. Melt the wax: Melt the beeswax and coconut oil in a saucepan over low heat.
  2. Prepare the wick: Fix the wick with its support in the bottom of the Canton jar, in the centre. You can use a spot of hot glue, but make sure the wick extends beyond the container, even if you have to cut it off once the candle is finished.
  3. Add the fragrance: Once your wax mixture resembles a melting symphony, add a few drops of your favourite fragrance. Lavender, eucalyptus, vanilla, you name it! You are the chef of your magical potion.
  4. Pour into the jars: Pour your wax mixture into your lovingly prepared glass containers. Be sure to fill them while leaving at least ½ inch free at the top to avoid spills.
  5. Allow to cool and harden: Patience, young apprentices! Let your candles sit quietly until they harden a little. Use the remaining time to meditate on the beauty of candle making or to watch your favourite TV series.

Psst ! Don’t be afraid to experiment with different fragrance combinations to create your own personalized scent. Let your creativity run wild!

Decorating candles

Once your candles have hardened, you can add decorative elements to make them even more special. Tie a pretty ribbon around the glass jar, stick on fun stickers or write messages like “Bright, full of energy, and meltingly perfect.”

Turning your Canton glass containers into unique candles is not only eco-friendly, it’s also fun and rewarding. By following these simple steps and adding a touch of love to your creation, you can brighten up your home while expressing your personality.
